NoteWalk - tool for the professional arranger

Notewalk is specificly written to edit cartons and rolls in the original layout

The purpose of NoteWalk is to edit midi files in piano roll mode. NoteWalk can read and write both format 1 (normal format) and 0 (old format) midi files.During editing a gamma (trackerbar description in standard 'Midiboek' format) can be opened, so Notewalk can support the editing process in a powerfull way.

Features:
- display of notes in color as specified in the gamma
- comments from 'toets, tegen, slagw and registers are displayed during inserting and editing of notes
- all dimensions, such as place and length of notes are displayed in millimeters, corresponding with the speed ('snelh') in the gamma
- correct playback, so no special translation has to be done by programs like Midimapper, IDFedit etc.
- many special functions to automate the creation of sliders, tremolo's are available in the form of 'MPL's'. These can be downloaded free
- there are extended methods for selecting, copying en pasting notes. Selection can even be done note by note
- in Notewalk an MPL is available to translate a midifile in to the standard Noteur-layout
- in Noteur an MPL is available to translate the midifile into the Notewalk-layout
- Midiboek can print a file from NoteWalk directly by means of the function 'Print with Midiboek'.

Differences with Noteur

Noteur works with standard midi files, in which drums are notated 'on beat' and registers are presented in the file as markers (so not as notes). These midi files are playable without the help of any note translation progam such as Midimapper, IDFedit etc. The layout in the pianoroll is that of standard midi, so not according to the actual layout of the notes in the carton or the roll that are produced from the file. Translation to the carton or roll has to be done afterwards, using Midiboek or any other translation program.

Notewalk works with a layout that is the same as the layout of the carton or roll the midi file is intended for. This is exactly the way of working with progams like Cakewalk. Such midi files cannot be played back in a normal way without the use of note translation programs. But Notewalk uses the gamma file, that describes the layout of the tracker, to play the midi file correctly without the use of note translation programs. Drum notes are, as usual at this way of working, notated earlier, but are played correctly 'on beat'. When snap is used during insertion of drum notes, the drum notes snap to the early position according to the shift value in the gamma. Registers are edited as notes, but do not give any sound during playback. From NoteWalk, files can be printed directly with Midiboek without the need to translate the file to standard layout first.

NoteWalk contains a programming language MPL (like CAL in Cakewalk). Separate documentation is available for it. The language is easier in use but offers more functions than CAL, especially for arranging books and rolls. The translation, necessary to punch the file with a computer controlled punch, can be done with an MPL, or with any existing CALprogram in Cakewalk. Midifiles from NoteWalk can be processed in Cakewalk without the use of a translating program and vice versa. Most of the MPL's can be used both in NoteWalk and Noteur, but there are MPL's that are specifically for one of both programs. This will be shown in the description when opening an MPL.

Read the documentation, it helps you
The documentation is mainly a reference manual, but you are advised to print it and read it once from beginning to end. This will give you an overview of the many functions of Notewalk within an hour. It saves time when you work with it.

Installation

When you install this version of NoteWalk, automatically two directories are created if they do not yet exist:
- c:\midigam with some demo gammas. We strongly recommend that you use this directory for your gamma-files (.gam).
- c:\midimplwalk with a number of MPL's and corresponding buttonsets (see documentation) . If you did use MPL's or buttonsets before, please copy this files to \midimplwalk. If you want to use another directory, change the location with "settings-locations" in NoteWalk.
NB: some MPL's are different for Noteur and Notewalk, so keep the MPL's in their original directory.

In case of problems with installation:

Normally the installation of NoteWalk does not require any special installation instructions. HOWEVER, sometimes it happens that setup.exe can not find the file setup.lst and ends with an error. This is due to the fact that the path name of the  tempory folder that winzip uses for extraction and execution is too long for setup.exe.

If you meet this problem, use the following procedure:

- download NoteWalk.zip. During download use the option 'save to disk' in stead of 'open'.
- after the download, open the file NoteWalk.zip(double click) and extract the contents to a directory, for instance 'NoteWalk' in the root of C. If the directory does not exist, winzip will create it.
- then execute the program setup.exe again and complete the setup procedure.
